Our WW2 workshop is a balance of educational based activities, facts, useful knowledge and a chance for children to see and try real period clothing. Portals to the Past’s award winning WW2 team, Corporal Alf Vincent and Mrs Coombe-Watson put across the community spirit, the national cohesion of the time and what total war meant to everyone, especially children. Alf and Bunty provide a vivid and memorable experience of life in Britain during WW2.
Cranfield Lower, Beds – “This workshop is our favourite and Richard and Bev are wonderful, I cannot praise enough! A big thank you as always”
From Home Guard drill, ARP training to exploring an evacuee’s suitcase, genuine WW2 artefacts, utility clothing and reserved civilian occupations, the personae of ‘Corporal Vincent’ and ‘Mrs Coombe-Watson’ really show the details of daily life during the war, using a variety of teaching aids including a genuine air raid siren.
After a lively introduction to the period, the rest of the morning’s activities are as follows:
• WW2 QUIZ
• HOME GUARD DRILL
• WW2 ARTEFACTS
Your afternoon begins with a talk about civilian occupations, followed by ARP training.
Watch out for the air raid siren – everyone to the shelters! Learn how they had fun in the war with dancing and a sing-along.
Evacuee suitcase, clothing rationing and utility clothing finish the day before the all clear siren.
Painters Ash Primary, Kent – “A wonderful day that vividly brought WW2 to life. The children were engaged by the activities and captivated when participating. The boys were especially motivated, which for Y6 is not easy. Thank you”
This workshop is led by Corporal Vincent and Mrs Coombes-Watson aka Richard and Beverley Bowring. They are WW2 enthusiasts, doing some event or another most of the year as well as appearing in museums. They have taken part of many historical documentaries and films.
