The focus of Portals to the Past’s Roman workshop is life in Britain under the Pax Romana as well as the wider empire. The children will explore the dramatic change in the lifestyle of even the lowliest of citizens after the arrival of the Roman legions, take a tour through a bath-house and feel the excitement of the games in the arena. Real Roman artefacts provide the opportunity to get a real hands-on experience of history.
Longford Park Primary, Coventry – “We had a fantastic day in year 4, which the children thoroughly enjoyed, were engaged in, and motivated by. I would definitely book again. Stuart was brilliant and had a natural manner which put the children at ease immediately. They listened to him fantastically and learned a lot! Thank you so much.”
This workshop can cater for up to 90 children.
After the short introduction, a series of activities will introduce many aspects of life under Roman rule.
• ROMAN ARTEFACTS AND THE BATH-HOUSE
• DELTA – A Roman numeral, maths based game.
• ROMAN QUIZ – Fascinating facts to explore.
• SEGEDUNUN – A simple Roman game just for fun.
Kimbolton Prep School, Cambs – “A perfect score for a perfect day! This is by far one of the best days of the year; the children love it and learn a great deal (as do the staff). I have had six Roman days now and still find it fantastic. It is a wonderful supplement to what we teach. In terms of educational value -it is priceless!”
The afternoon starts with a display of Roman and Celtic weapons and armour. A walk through Boudicca’s final battle with the Romans. The day finishes with your very own gladiator show where the children have all the important roles from the emperor down to the slaves. All our Roman workshop leaders have appeared in BBC’s “Horrible Histories”, many historical documentaries and feature films as well as working in schools and museums.
